Buying Curtains at The Warehouse

Choosing your curtains can be a challange, so we've put together a buying guide to help make shopping for curtains easy.

Prior to buying your curtains you need to decide on the type of curtain that you need. Think about the room that you're buying for, is it a bedroom where you want to block out the light or a living room that your trying to keep warm? The Warehouse has a range of curtains available online and in store.

Step 1: Choose your style

Thermal Lined Curtains

Thermal curtains are an absolute game-changer – as well as insulating the room, our range also helps to minimise sound, and block out the sun’s rays. All of our lined curtains have a thermal coating that creates a barrier between the window and your room, which prevents air from entering or leaving, keeping your home warm in winter and cool in summer. Floor-length curtains are the best option for both insulation and style – they make the room seem bigger and more polished.

Blackout Thermal Lined Curtains

It’s all in the name with this style. Blackout thermal lined curtains are both thermally lined and blackout the light. Perfect for those light sleepers who don’t want to wake up with the sunrise.

Blackout Thermal Lined create extra insulation with 3 layers of acrylic thermal. The centre layer of black coating blocks out light and helps keep your home warmer in winter and cooler in summer by preventing air from entering or leaving the room.

Triple Weave are self-lined, woven with 3 layers the centre layer is black creating room darkening and heat retention properties as well as great drapability. Floor length curtains give added insulation by trapping heat between the window and wall space.

Choosing your header

Curtain heading refers to the style of pleat of finish at the top of the curtain there are 2 types of curtain headings that The Warehouse stocks.

  1. Eyelet curtains have eyelets at the top of the curtain and will require a rod.
  2. Pencil pleat curtains have closely gathered folds that resemble a row of pencils laid side by side

Tracks or Rods?

Curtain tracks and rods refer to the rail that the curtains hang from.

Curtain Tracks are available in a range of different sizes and are fixed directly to the architrave or wall just above the window.

Curtain Rods/poles are also available in a range of different sizes and are configured to have glides underneath or to have rings/hooks or with an eyelet curtain.

Step 3: Measure

How to measure your Curtains

To ensure the best possible fit for your curtains you need to:

  1. Decide whether you want your curtains to hang from a track or a pole
  2. Fit the track or pole before taking measurements. It should be positioned 10cm above the window and extend out 15cm either side

Step One – Measuring Width A

  1. Measure the total width of the track or pole. When measuring poles – exclude the finials which are the decorative ornaments on the tops or ends of the pole.
  2. Do not measure the actual window unless it is wall to wall. Note: The size given refers to the length of the track the curtains will fit. For example, if you purchase a pair of readymade curtains measuring 150 – 230cm wide x 205cm drop – you will receive two curtains that will fit a track up to 230cm wise and are 205cm long.


 

Step Two – Measuring Drop B

Decide where you would like your curtains to fall in relation to the sill. We suggest the following: 

  1. Sill length curtains finish 1.25cm above the sill.
  2. Curtains that fall below the sill finish 15cm below.
  3. Floor length curtains finish 1.5cm from the floor (although you can have them longer depending on the look that you are trying to achieve.

If it is an extra wide window you may have to buy an extra curtain pack.

The width relates to the area that the pair of curtains together will cover. The reason for this range depends on the personal preference for how much gather there will be when the curtains are hung. For example, a pair of curtains in the size 230-330cm will fit a track range from 230cm to 330cm with a track of 230cm having a more pleated effect when hanging than on a 330cm track which will have less fullness and pleats.

Curtains are sold in pairs. Sheers are sold as one per pack.

We offer up to 10 readymade sizes across a variety of curtains however we don’t currently offer custom or additional sizes outside of these.

Currently we cannot send out fabric swatches but please feel free to contact customer service who can help you to choose the appropriate curtain or visit instore where we have some swatches available.

No - curtain packs are not colour batched in store.

Yes, our curtains have joins in selected sizes.

Curtain heading refers to the style of pleat of finish (for example Pencil Pleat or Eyelet) at the top of the curtain.

This refers to the style of gathering at the top of the curtain. A tape is used to create folds that are gathered closely together to resemble a row of pencils laid side by side. They are created by pulling cords on the tape and knotting the cords off at each end to secure the pleats in place. They can be used on curtain rods or tracks. The pencil pleat curtain is our most popular heading style as it allows you to adjust the gathers to the fullness you prefer and gives more flexibility when selecting the size for your window.

Our range offers Pencil Pleat in every style and eyelet headings in a wide range of styles.

You can hang them on a wire – carefully slit at each end of the tape and thread the wire through or you can hang them from a track. (You will also need to purchase hooks to do this). NB. It is important that the cords at one end are securely tied off before pulling cords from the other end.

In most cases 20cm on either side of the window. However, for larger curtains you might want to consider extending this to 30cm on either side.
