The United States of America and the Republic of Ireland both share a common backstory: achieving independence from Great Britain. Since America’s first Independence Day in 1776, citizens have celebrated the country’s official separation from Britain with parades, cookouts, concerts, fireworks, and other festivities. Ireland’s Independence Day is December 6, 1922, and though it is not celebrated by the Irish like it is in the United States, it is still recognized as the day they attained liberation from Britain.
Through this common ideology of seeking independence, the United States and Ireland have maintained an important and close relationship. Shared values and ancestral roots, coupled with a mutually- beneficial exchange of tourism, education, and research, has helped foster a positive relationship between the countries. This bond has resulted in Killarney, a town in southwestern Ireland, creating a 4th of July festival to celebrate its strong links with the USA and American tourists.
Our Enchanting Ireland tour pays a visit to the scenic village of Killarney, and one of our recent departures happened to align perfectly for guests to experience their 4th of July festivities! Our group was met with an old-fashioned Independence Day parade, complete with marching bands, cheerleading routines, festive floats, Uncle Sam, and a delightful display of all 50 United States flags. The Main Street was lined with onlookers who excitedly chanted “USA! USA!” as the parade went by. Later that night, the group was treated to a stunning 20-minute firework extravaganza, rounding out a complete 4th of July celebration just like back home. Needless to say, our guests were impressed and pleasantly surprised by the outpouring of love for the United States, and they thoroughly enjoyed the cheerful entertainment . This is certainly an Independence Day our travelers will remember for years to come!
